Fall Plein Air Painting Workshop

Turner Vinson | October 22 / 23 / 24 | $375

Art Focus is excited to host Turner Vinson’s fall plein air painting workshop. It’s a beautiful time of year to be in the Bitterroot Valley, and we are hoping to have some wonderful autumn colors to paint. In this three day workshop, Turner will guide you through his approach and mindset towards painting on-location. Throughout the workshop, Turner will explain how and why he chooses a specific subject, how to compose it, how to simplify it, and how to turn it into a painting. There will be multiple demonstrations, small compact lectures, as well as individual attention and instruction as students tackle their own plein air paintings. All skill levels are welcome, but some painting experience is recommended. The weather in October can be a bit unpredictable. Please be prepared to paint in fairly cool temperatures, and even in an early snowfall. Fall colors and snow can be a wonderful subject to paint! However, we will have access to a studio if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Supplies

  • Oil Paint - feel free to use the colors of your choice. You’re not required or expected to have these exact colors.  Turner’s typical palette includes: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Orange, Burnt Umber, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Violet Deep, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue, Celestial Blue, Emerald Green.
  • Brushes - feel free to use the brushes of your choice. Turner’s brushes include natural bristle Filberts sizes 1-12, and a variety of small soft synthetic brushes.
  • Panel/Canvas - at least 8 canvas or panels no smaller than 8x10. Turner typically paints much larger on location, so feel free to challenge yourself and tackle any size canvas.
